Tresa Cawley's blog ::... what they want to hear” ethos of bureaucracy, but...it. - Everything is a racket, even...this article on the Baltimore police...of the scene in Season One when D’Angelo...

Two               different               shows,               two               different               themes,               and               two               completely               different               levels               of               reality               and               predictability-"Breaking               Bad"               and               "The               Walking               Dead"               are               the               crown               jewels               of               AMC's               reality               lineup,               but               appear               headed               in               different               directions.

"Breaking               Bad"               may               have               the               acolades,               but               the               show,               based               on               an               ex-science               teacher               gone               meth               cook,               has               become               very               predictable               and               less               realistic.

Conversely,               "The               Walking               Dead",               following               the               trials               and               tribulations               of               a               small               band               of               survivors               in               a               post-zombie               apocalypse,               has               become               strangely               more               realistic,               and               far               less               predictable.

That               makes               absolutely               no               sense,               right?

Well,               stay               with               me               on               this               one.

In               season               4               of               "Breaking               Bad",               we               saw               what               was               coming               from               around               every               corner,               and               were               able               to               predict               the               ultimate               outcome               of               every               situation.

The               "getting               there"               was,               of               course,               what               kept               things               interesting.

But               did               anybody...

Think               for               one               minute               Gus               Fring               was               going               to               live               through               the               season?

His               ultimate               demise               was               a               very               interesting               and               clever               way               to               go,               but               we               all               knew               Walter               White               was               going               to               kill               Gus.

Not               see               Skylar               White               loaning               her               former               boss               (and               ex-lover)               the               money               he               needed               to               avoid               tax               fraud               by               the               IRS?

Put               two               and               two               together               and               realize               Gus               was               trying               to               create               a               rift               between               Jesse               Pinkman               and               Walter               White,               thus               eliminating               Walter?

Think               Hank               wasn't               going               to               figure               out               Gus               was               the               Meth               kingpin               of               the               Southwest?

Even               the               most               naive               TV               aficianado,               and               especially               fans               of               the               show,               had               to               see               these               major               developements               coming               a               mile               away.

The               show               is               running               out               of               ways               to               surprise               us,               and               I               can't               see               how               they               can               possibly               write               more               than               another               season               or               two               of               interesting               scripts               to               keep               us               awake.

Did               you               ever               notice               that               not               one               major               character               has               died               on               "Breaking               Bad"?

Hank               was               the               closest.

But               don't               you               think               the               show               would               be               a               little               more               spicy               if,               say,               Junior               got               waxed               by               the               cartel?

Or               maybe               Marie               gets               taken               out               by               the               cartel,               seeing               as               they               couldn't               pop               Hank.

The               biggest               difference               (and               what               makes               "The               Walking               Dead"               more               realistic),               is               that               we               know               that               all               of               the               main               characters               are               safe.

From               episode               one,               no               one               has               been               safe               in               "The               Walking               Dead",               and               that's               what               makes               for               great               drama.

It's               what               keeps               you               on               the               edge               of               your               seat.

Who's               next?

Did               anyone               see               Sophia,               a               young               girl,               walking               out               of               that               barn               as               a               "Walker",               and               having               to               be               blown               away               by               Rick?

Who               saw               Dale               getting               gored               by               a               Walker,               and               with               no               shot               at               survival,               having               to               be               euthanized?

Shane               had               to               go,               but               could               any               of               us               have               predicted               that               Rick               would               stab               his               former               best               friend               to               death?

And               speaking               of               Shane,               no               one               could               have               seen               him               going               from               ultimate               leader               to               reckless,               obsessed,               maniac.

Did               anyone               think               Daryl               would               turn               from               a               hillbilly               with               a               chip               on               his               shoulder,               to               one               of               the               most               reliable               members               of               the               group?

"Breaking               Bad"               and               "The               Walking               Dead"               are               two               great               shows               going               in               two               different               directions.

The               biggest               reason               why               is               predictability.
