The Walking Dead - Season 1 Final Episode - TS-19 Summary When we last left The Walking Dead's hero, Rick Grimes, and the rest of the survivors, they were banging on the outside of the CDC compound, begging to be let in. In this second to last episode, Wildfire, a debate raged among the survivors about whether or not they should head to the CDC (the option favored by Rick), or Fort Benning (the option favored by Shane). The camp chose Rick's options, hoping that some portion of the CDC might still be operating and working on a cure for the zombie epidemic. In the final scene of Wildfire, an increasingly desperate Rick screams to "let us in" after seeing a security camera move--a bright white light blasts out at the survivors as the door opened, and the credits rolled. Before returning to the present predicament, TS-19 begins with a flashback to Shane visiting Rick in the hospital. The military is fighting with the zombies at this point, but it's clear that they're losing. Shane entertains the idea of taking Rick out of the hospital, but recognizes the machines that he's hooked up to are necessary. A conflicted Shane finally leaves, but barricades Rick's room before doing so. The scene is important in so far as it establishes that Shane wasn't being dishonest with Lori when telling her he thought Rick was dead, and it paves the way for a more balanced love triangle in future episodes. The season finale episode of The Walking Dead, TS-19, then fast forwards to just seconds after Wildfire. The group enters the compound, and we learn that just one CDC scientist is left alive, Jenner. Jenner's been going slowly insane while working alone on a cure in an isolated laboratory. The title of the episode, TS-19, refers to Tissue Sample 19, which Jenner is in the process of testing. But an accident undoubtedly caused by stress and fatigue resulted in the destruction of TS-19, and a downtrodden Jenner is now left without hope of finding a cure. Jenner shows an animation to the survivors that explains the "scientific" basis of this zombie apocalypse. Essentially, once you become infected, your body dies, remains dormant for some period of time, and then the most primitive portion of your brain, your medulla (aka the brain stem) reanimates, and you become an unthinking, nearly mindless predator thirsting for blood. We learn that other nations around the world have also fallen and that transnational contact has long since been lost. But just as was the case with that mysterious black helicopter over downtown Atlanta, Jenner tells us that the French were allegedly the last to fall, and that they believed themselves to be close to a cure. And so, distant rays of hope do exist in this otherwise destitute post-apocolypse. We also learn that TS-19 was none other than Jenner's wife, a fellow scientist at the CDC. Dale inquires about a clock counting down on the wall, and Jenner informs them that the clock is a countdown to decontamination procedures that will kick in when the generator runs out of power. The CDC houses strains of many deadly diseases, and the computers are programmed to destroy these strains when they know that they are about to lose power. Jenner seems to see this as a preferrable ending. They will be instantly and painlessly incinerated with the rest of the facility, which is better than the hopeless outside world. Rick argues on the side of hope, and rallies his crew to leave the facility and continue to search for something better. Jacqui and Andrea decide to stay with Jenner, favoring the painless ending. But at the last minute, Dale manages to talk Andrea in to leaving, while Jenner and Jacqui remain in the CDC. The survivors then reassemble the caravan and venture out in to the great unknown. But fear not, Walking Dead fans, writer/producer Robert Kirkman recently revealed some spoilers for Season 2 of The Walking Dead, which you can check out here. For the time being, those spoilers will have to satisfy your appetite. Season 2 of The Walking Dead, scheduled for 13 episodes, is likely to begin in October of 2011.
