Tresa Cawley's blog ::"The Walking Dead: Rise of at the Governor" by Robert Kirkman & Jay Bonansinga

AMC               has               announced               plans               for               a               spin-off               to               the               popular               zombie               apocalypse               series:               The               Walking               Dead.

The               spinoff               is               scheduled               to               start               shooting               next               year               and               will               air               in               2015,               after               The               Walking               Dead               season               4               (and               possibly               5).

However,               they're               being               very               quiet               about               specifics.

AMC               say               they               want               to               expand               in               new               directions               and               move               away               from               the               comic               books,               into               a               whole               new               corner               of               the               post-apocalyptic               zombie               world.

The               comic               book               creator,               Robert               Kirkman               will               produce               the               Walking               Dead               spin-off.

I               would               like               to               see               them               explore               a               completely               different               faction.

My               fear               is               that               they               just               repeat               the               basic               story               with               a               new               group               of               rag-tag               survivors.

They               might               take               1               member               from               this               group               to               go               off               on               his               or               her               own,               find               a               new               group,               and               start               the               spinoff               from               there.

We               would               follow               the               second               group               on               it's               route               across               America,               called               "Walking               Dead               L.A."               or               some               such               spinoff.

A               better               approach               would               be               to               follow               a               team               of               scientists               and               doctors               holed               up               at               a               private               laboratory,               working               on               a               cure               for               the               virus.

They               would               experiment               on               the               zombies               and               find               new               ways               to               immobilize               the               living               dead.

In               the               course               of               their               work,               they               create               mutants               far               worse               than               the               current               zombies.

This               would               be               a               unique               storyline,               and               not               just               a               new               branch               of               the               Walking               Dead               v.

2.2               rehashing               the               same               scenarios               over               and               over.

A               macro               approach               would               also               be               different,               looking               at               the               country               as               a               whole,               from               a               command               center,               as               opposed               to               the               micro               world               of               the               small               group.

               The               Challenge
It's               not               easy               to               make               zombies               interesting               for               5               seasons.

It               won't               be               easy               to               keep               the               current               series               alive               and               compelling,               and               even               harder               to               keep               a               second               series               going               strong.

Already               they               show               small               signs               of               losing               steam               (but               nothing               fatal),               so               I'm               not               sure               season               5               will               be               the               best               time               to               introduce               the               new               spinoff.

They               need               to               do               it               now,               as               in               yesterday,               or               it               may               be               too               late.

Right               now               AMC               is               at               the               top               of               its               game,               but               2               years               from               now...

maybe               not.

Have               they               jumped               on               this               wagon               a               bit               late?

               The               Kill-off               model
So               far               they've               used               a               method               of               killing               off               main               characters               willy               nilly               at               every               turn,               and               it's               worked               well               for               AMC.

We               never               know               who               will               get               axed               next.

But               at               some               point,               they               need               to               stop               that.

People               don't               tune               in               week               after               week               to               meet               new               characters.

We               fall               in               "like"               with               the               cast,               and               we               start               to               care               about               them.

We               need               those               characters               returning               for               the               next               episode.

That's               what               made               Star               Trek               and               Stargate               so               popular.

Can               you               imagine               opening               the               4               th               season               of               ST:NG               with               an               entirely               new               crew               of               the               Enterprise?

               Hot               Air               Balloon
So               when               are               they               getting               a               hot               air               balloon?

It               makes               perfect               sense               for               Rick               and               Daryl               to               find               a               balloon               that               can               be               quietly               hoisted               above               their               compound.

They               could               see               trouble               coming               from               miles               away,               with               no               noise.

I               just               hope               they               figure               this               out               in               either               TWD               or               The               Walking               Dead               spinoff.

I               like               smart               protagonists.

Let's               keep               our               fingers               crossed               for               Zombie               Apocalypse               2.0,               or               whatever               they               call               the               new               Walking               Dead               spinoff,               and               high               hopes               for               the               Walking               Dead               season               4               and               season               5.

So               far,               it's               been               a               good               ride!

See               Also:               Songs               for               the               Walking               Dead               Soundtrack
