The Dead are Walking The Walking Dead was originally a comic book series written by Robert Kirkman. The series was so popular that it later evolved into a video game and a television series. This review is about the video game made for PC, MAC, the Playstation 3, and Xbox360. The Walking Dead video game was both developed and published by Telltale games, known for making Sam and Max games as well as some CSI video games, which are all adventure games. So the first thing I thought the Walking Dead was going to be like was a Broken Sword type of point and click game, but boy was I wrong… The gameplay The Walking Dead video game was released in April 2012, as episode one: A new day. Episode two: Starved for help, followed along to be released in June of the same year. Like most adventure games this is a point and click style game. Which means you move your cursor around the screen and… "point and click" to perform actions. Most Point and click games consist of you looking around the area to find a specific item so that you can, let's say unlock a door to move on to the next area. The Walking Dead is the same way; the only difference is that this world is full of violent zombies, bandits, and scared and angry people. You will not only have to point and click your way around the area so that you can move on to the next area, but you will also have to make decisions that will affect future gameplay as well as the story. I know we were promised something similar with Mass Effect, so I was leery going into this thinking the story would be the same and amount to nothing in the end. I was surprised with how the characters would remember what choices were made, what was said, or what action was made earlier in the game, and even choices made from episode one would come back to haunt you in the next episode. If you let one person die and the other live, the two characters will actually swap places through all five episodes. So choose carefully who you save. It really made me feel like I was there and involved with what was going on, which made me want to play and see more. I thought the game did a good job in tying together the gameplay elements, story, and the small interactive bits with making hard choices while fighting off zombies. When you have to make a choice an option menu will pop up and you will have four choices that you can choose from, but you will have a limited amount of time to make this choice. I noticed based on the situation some choices gave you more time than others, which really put pressure on you with what you should do. If you don't make a choice fast enough the game will pick something for you, which in a tough situation normally was the worst possible choice that gets everyone killed. The game has action it in, but most of it revolves around the simple mechanic of point and click, so nothing ever gets confusing with what you have to do. Rather you are shooting a gun, kicking a zombie in the face, or attempting to run away, you simply pointing and click to perform the action. The only downside is that this would have made for a better movie than a game since the gameplay is so simple. You walk around trying to figure out what to do next, find an item, and then you watch a bunch of cutscenes, which moves you along to making a hard choice, and then it repeats. I wouldn't really consider this as a hardcore action game, nor a classic RPG, nor is it really a survival game because everything is so simple. This is an adventure horror game that is telling a story, and if you accept it for what it is, then I say that the gameplay is actually very well done and very well paced. The Story The story for this game is superb. It takes places during a zombie apocalypse, and you watch it from the point of view of Lee Everett, a guy being escorted by a police officer for a crime he may or may not have committed. The ride however is interrupted by the zombie attack, which in a way frees Lee from going to jail. You will play as Lee as he tries to survive the zombie invasion while attempting to also help his fellow survivors stay alive, and will learn a bit about Lee's past as well as his allies as the story progresses. The zombies are rare and few, there are just enough of them scattered about so that you don't forget about them, but from what I noticed this isn't a 28 days later type of story where you are always flooded with hoards of zombies. This makes the story extremely scary as you walk around in an empty house, or search through some boxes for a useful item that you need, because you will never know if zombies are about to pop out to attack you. When a zombie does happen to jump out it really gets your heart pumping with fear because you just don't know what is going to happen next. The story does take some really good twists and turns that I didn't see coming, and it literally kept me on the edge of my seat. The cast of characters are amazing, the voice acting and the way they behaved hooked me right away and I really started to feel like they were people, and not just a group of NPCs I was talking to. So again, the way the cutscenes and gameplay mix together is like you are watching one giant interactive movie. Overall The Walking Dead video game is about two hours and thirty minutes in length, but because it is broken down into episodes and because you may get stuck on certain "puzzles", it makes the game about four to five hours long with episodes one and two combined. For a video game it feels a bit short, but because there are multiple choices you do get quite a bit of replayability to go back and play it again to choose something different. One of the biggest flaws I saw with the game was the glitchy loading scenes where the game would lag slightly while loading the next cutscene. My guess is that with all the multiple choices you can choose from the game has to go through them all and line up the next scene correctly so that all your previous choices link up, and that is what causes the lag in between scenes. The game does an awesome job of telling the story of the survivors and really does keep you on the edge of your seat. I love when you get placed in a tough spot and you have to make a hard choice and all the NPCs start yelling their opinions at you. All of the overlapping voices really adds to the chaos and drama of the situation and makes the choices so much more difficult. The music is beautifully done, the theme song comes on at just the right moments to make you care, which adds to making the characters seem real, or at some points all the music will cut out and go dead silent just to leave a bit of ambient noise in the background to trigger a bit of fear. I can't wait for episode three through five to be released to see what happens next. The Walking Dead Episode three: Long road ahead, is rumored to be released sometime in August of 2012, but it has not officially been announced yet. My guess is that episode three slightly ties in with the Walking Dead TV show, and to boost sales and avoid spoilers they will release them close together; so keep an eye out for it. If you like point and click games, zombies, and a good story, then I highly recommend that you give this game a try. Trust me, it will be worth it. Comment below and tell us what you think of the game, and if others should go out and buy it. |
